College students, Don’t fall victim to subletting scams

If you are planning to sublet your apartment for the summer, be mindful of a new type of scam that is on the rise. Scammers pose as interested subletters, sending you a bogus check or money order. They request that you negotiate the item, then wire a certain portion of the money back to them. When the check eventually bounces, you lose the entire amount the check was written for from your account. Students have lost thousands of dollars this way.

If you have questions on subletting scams or have noticed any suspicious activity when you sublet your apartment, call our Fraud Prevention Department at 232-5000 or 800-533-6773.
