Overdraft Protection

We're committed to your financial success and understand that overdrafts can happen to even the most careful of people. Unlike most financial institutions, we've designed our overdraft business practices and services to help you stay in control so that a small account oversight doesn't turn into a costly expense. For your protection and peace of mind, we've created a consumer friendly1 line-up of overdraft protection options:

  • Reserve Line of Credit

The reserve line of credit is the first line of protection when an overdraft occurs. We'll automatically advance enough to cover your account in $100 increments. A $5 fee may be charged to the account receiving the advance funds.2 Interest also accrues on the outstanding balance until the loan is paid in full.

  • Transfer from Savings

Next, we'll check to see whether a transfer from a savings account would prevent the overdraft. If so, we'll automatically transfer the money in easy to track $100 increments. A $5 fee may be charged to the account receiving the overdraft transfer of funds.2

  • Basic Reserve

As a last defense, all checking accounts over 90-days old automatically have Basic Reserve3 coverage. Access Checking has $200 of coverage; Value has $400; and Premium has $600. There's a charge for this service, the same fee as a returned check, but you'll save the fees charged by merchants.

You also have the flexibility to order your overdraft protection accounts to fit your needs. You can view your overdraft protection preferences on Web Branch, and can customize them to suit your needs by visiting any of our branches or by calling us.

1We're committed to fairness and transparency in our overdraft practices. We don't assess overdraft/NSF fees for debit card transactions except for overdrafts related to recurring debit card transactions like health club dues. A $10 negative account balance grace threshold is also provided (members who overdraw their account by less than $10 will not be charged an overdraft fee). UW Credit Union limits overdraft fees to no more than one per business day. Members will have 45 days to bring the account current. Payment of overdrafts is discretionary. Please see overdraft business practices for a comprehensive discussion of our overdraft practices.
2There is a $5 overdraft transfer fee when funds are automatically transferred from a reserve line of credit or other deposit account. The fee is charged to the account receiving the funds and will not exceed $5 per business day regardless of the number of overdraft items or accounts involved. Please see overdraft business practices for a comprehensive discussion of our overdraft practices.
3An overdraft fee of $30 will be charged to cover overdrafts from ACH debit, recurring debit card and checks.
