How to Save on Your Vacation

Everyone deserves break, but not every budget can afford it. If you’re looking ahead to summer fun and wondering how to make it happen, consider a few of these money-saving tips.

Go in the Low Season

Although they still have much to offer, some locations are less popular in the summer months, allowing you to beat the crowds and score big discounts on airfare and hotel stays.

Do some research to find your preferred low-season option. Ready to explore a new city? Brave the heat in perennial favorites like New Orleans or Miami. Planning a hike in the mountains? Take advantage of summer recreation in ski resort destinations like Park City, Utah, or Stowe, Vermont.

Find Cheap Flights

If you’re planning to fly, there are a few ways to save on airfare bookings. For the best prices on domestic flights, aim to make your booking one to three months before departure.

When booking, be as flexible as possible. An early morning weekday flight may not sound ideal but can cost significantly less than weekend flights. Likewise, non-stop flights are easier but indirect flights are cheaper. Evaluate the time and convenience factors versus cost savings.

Save on Meals

While on vacation, cut down on daily expenses with smart meal planning. Stock up on refreshments at the grocery store and carry snacks with you to avoid impulse purchases.

Consider keeping a cooler in the car for road trips, and booking accommodations that offer a fridge or even a full kitchen. With the option to prepare your own food, you can save on expensive restaurant meals and put that money toward more vacation fun.

Make It a Staycation

For an affordable and relaxing getaway, you may want to look no further than your own backyard. A staycation offers you and your family the chance to get reacquainted with local amenities while saving money.

Go camping at a state park, plan a day at the beach or pool, explore nearby museums or the zoo, book tickets to a show or ball game. Start with a few of these suggestions; then, brainstorm your own staycation ideas.
