How to Save on Your Vacation

Ready for a change of scenery? As you make your travel plans, consider these tips to make the most out of your vacation without breaking the bank.

Go in the Low Season

Although they still have much to offer, certain destinations are less popular during the summer months. Taking advantage of the low season may help you save money on expenses such as airfare and hotel stays – all while avoiding big crowds.

Do some research and find out which of your preferred destinations may be in the low season when you want to travel. Brave the heat and visit Miami or New Orleans, or plan a hike in a city known for its ski resorts. Be sure to note ahead of time which restrictions might be in place during your trip, and plan your itinerary accordingly.

Find Cheap Flights

A bit of planning can save a lot on airfare. Domestic flights typically offer the best prices if you’re able to book one to three months before your departure.

When booking, be as flexible as possible. Traveling early in the morning on a weekday is likely to cost significantly less than it might during the weekend. And while non-stop flights are convenient, indirect flights tend to be cheaper. What’s right for you? Small sacrifices may net significant savings, so consider your options!

Save on Meals

You can’t take a vacation from eating, but you can make a plan to feed yourself for less while on vacation. Try to book accommodations that have a fridge or a full kitchen and stock up at a local grocery store. Keep snacks handy to help avoid impulse purchases. Consider keeping a cooler in the car for road trips.

With the option to prepare your own food, you can avoid more expensive restaurant meals and put that money toward more vacation fun.

Keep It Local

You can have a great vacation without having to travel far. You’d be hard pressed to find a better time to reacquaint yourself with your favorite local spots, or to discover some new favorites just a few hours down the road. A visit to your local museum or zoo can provide an escape without the need to travel far. State parks, camping trips or beach days can be a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather. Or, consider booking tickets to a show or taking in a ball game. Regardless of where you choose to visit, your local favorites will be thrilled to welcome you – whether for the first time or for the first time in a long time.
