UW Credit Union Celebrates Green Master Status for Third Consecutive Year
Madison, WI – December 12, 2019 – The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council has named UW Credit Union a Green Master for the third consecutive year. Participants in the program receive recognition for their sustainability accomplishments and develop ideas for future sustainability actions.
“We’ve made sustainability a priority here at UW Credit Union,” says Paul Kundert, president and CEO at UW Credit Union, “Our green efforts are driven by the passion of our employees and led by our 23-person Green Team that educate and implement organization-wide initiatives.”
UW Credit Union’s dedication towards sustainability is shown through programs like ewaste recycling of electronics, employee edible garden, energy efficient lighting, water reduction, composting and encouragement of using green transportation by sponsoring Madison BCycle and Bublr Bikes in Milwaukee to name a few.
“We are honored to achieve this goal for the third year and look forward to strengthening our efforts for years to come,” explains Cheryl Weisensel, facilities director at UW Credit Union. “Our holistic approach includes reduction of energy use, strategies for minimizing our impact on the environment, and sustainable practices in our workplace and governance.”
In addition to offsetting 100% of their carbon footprint by purchasing renewable energy credits from Midwest companies that generate power from solar, wind and biomass, they’ve implemented geothermal with a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system in their new buildings. This system provides an efficient, energy-saving HVAC system.
The Green Masters Program is an objective, points-based recognition and assessment program that enables Wisconsin businesses of all sizes and from any sector to join a group of like-minded companies that are on the road to sustainability. The program has established three levels of participation: Green Apprentice, Green Professional, and Green Master. UW Credit Union joined the program as a Green Master in 2017. Each year at the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council Conference, the current top 20 percent of companies that applied during the calendar year are identified and recognized as the Green Masters level companies.
“The Green Masters Program is a tool for businesses to assess and grow their sustainability programs, to benchmark against their industry and to receive a third part certification recognizing their achievements in sustainability,” says WSBC’s managing director, Jessy Servi Ortiz.
