Down Payment Assistance

If you don’t have the savings to cover a down payment and closing costs on a new home, it might feel like you’ll be stuck renting forever — but you’re not out of luck.

What is Down Payment Assistance?

Down payment assistance is money available to homebuyers in the form of low- or no-interest loans, grants, tax credits, savings programs and more. Homebuyers must meet certain eligibility requirements to receive assistance.

Thanks to many great local organizations and our experienced home loan experts, you could receive down payment assistance and make your homeownership dreams a reality.

What are the requirements?

It depends on the organization, but applicants typically must:

1. Be below a certain income threshold. This can vary by organization, location, family size and more.

2. Be a first-time homebuyer. Definitions may vary by state and organization. For example: in Wisconsin, if you haven’t owned a home in the past three years, you could be considered a first-time homebuyer.

3. Agree to live in their home for a minimum number of years. If you end up selling your home before that minimum, you may be subject to fees or penalties.

4. Live in a certain area. Organizations and lenders may only support homebuyers looking to buy in certain states, counties, or other locales.
